Magic and Morsels
Minecraft has always been one of my favorite games and I love to see how it evolves over time as a Game Designer. For this design challenge I created my own year long custom Minecraft Update "Magic and Morsels" which is centered around expanding on the magic and culinary themes of Minecraft. I made this Year long update into 4 different named Game Drops to mirror the development cycle at Mojang. This design challenge focused on expanding and designing blocks, mobs, biomes, mechanics, and more while staying consistent with the style, branding, lore, design philosophy, and identity of Minecraft. This is not a real Update or set of Game Drops.

Notice!
This is a design challenge not a real Update or set of Game Drops. The challenge is about revisiting and expanding on the themes of cooking and magic that exist in Minecraft. I utilized Block Bench, Aesprite, Clip Studio Paint, and Java Minecraft to mock up my designs and concepts following industry standard game design and development practices.

Magic and Morsels Drop 1: Fall
Autumn Eats
The first drop of the year focuses primarily on farming and cooking as it establishes the foundation for the year. Its features include the new Autumn Forest Biome, Deer Passive Mob, Crusher Block, Cooking Station Block, 7 New Crops, 8 New Fruits, Knife Weapon, 6 New Enchantments, and various Changes/Accessibility Features.
Autumn Forest Biome

The Autumn Forest is home to the new Maple tree which can grow 1 of 9 different color Leaves. Its wood color is similar to that of Oak, Bamboo, and Birch with a light orange tone. The Autumn biome has a orange foliage color and a light blue water color. Fallen Leaves, Pumpkins, Sunflowers, Packed Mud, and the new Tart Berry Bushes spawn naturally in it. Tart Berry Bushes can be walked through without damaging Mobs and can be Right Clicked to harvest Tart Berries. The Autumn Forest like other Forest types can be found between hot and cold biomes.
Deer

Deer are the newest fully wild passive mob to enter Minecraft. Deer are fast skittish creatures that spawn in Plains and Forest biomes. Killing Deer isn't easy and incentivizes players to have ranged weapons or to sneak up on them. Deer grow Antlers and drop them over time which can be used as Sticks, crafted into Bone Meal, or brewed into Potions of Traversing that allow players to walk up 1 high blocks without Jumping. Killing Deer gives 4-9 Raw Venison, 2-4 Leather, and the 0-2 Antlers it had. Raw Venison restores 4 Hunger and 2 Saturation while Cooked Venison restores 9 Hunger and 13 Saturation.
Crusher

The Crusher Block has 3 Input and 3 Output slots that can break down blocks and items into different items and blocks when it has an active Redstone Signal. For example, Mangrove Stairs can be crushed into sticks, Stone can be crushed into Gravel, Gravel can be crushed into Sand, or Wheat can be crushed into Flour. The Crusher is made using 1 Polished Deepslate in the center, 2 Grindstones in the top 2 sides, 2 Iron Bars in the center sides and bottom sides, and 1 Redstone Dust in the center on the bottom.
Cooking Station

The Cooking Station Block has 9 Input Slots, 1 Fuel Slot, 1 Water Slot, and 1 Output Slot. Food items can be placed inside the input slots which show available Food Crafting Recipes they can be used to make. Selecting a Food Crafting Recipe will start the crafting process using the items in the Input Slots, Fuel, and sometimes Water to craft it shapelessly over a period of time until the items to craft it are used up. Some Food Crafting Recipes require Fuel, Some require Water, and some require both. Similar to a Cauldron, Water Bottles and Water Buckets can be Right Clicked or Dispensed on the Cooking Station to fill it with up to 6 Bottles worth of Water. The Cooking Station is made using 1 Crafting Table in the center, 1 Bucket in the top center, 2 Iron Ingots in the top sides, 2 vertical Brick Blocks on the center and bottom sides, and 1 Furnace in the bottom center.
New Crops

Lettuce, Tomatoes, Onions, Peppers, Corn, Beans, Rice, and Spice Leaves are new Crops coming to Minecraft. Similarly to existing Crops, they are not great to eat raw by themselves, but together they can be made into more efficient food items.

The new Orchard Tree grows in all Overworld biomes and grows a variety of Fruits based on the biome they are in. Crafting the Orchard Sapling with a desired Fruit guarantees it will grow it rather than the Fruit of the biome its in. Orchard Wood is a light beige and its Leaves can be Bone Mealed to have them Bud and Flower before it creates Fruit which can be right clicked to harvest.

Temperate Fruit: Apples, Oranges, Peaches, and Olives
Cold Fruit: Pears, Plums, Cherries, and Figs
Hot Fruit: Mangos, Lemons, Bananas, and Dragon Fruit
Knife

The Knife is a short range Melee Weapon that attacks faster than a sword and does slightly less damage. A Knife is made using 1 Stick and 1 Tiered Material diagonal from each other and can be crafted in the player's inventory. It can harvest Thatch and Sticks from Plant related Blocks and Plants rather than collecting them.
Thatch can be made into Rope which acts as a mix between Ladders and Chains as well as Thatch Blocks which dry out over time when placed and can be used for fuel or for decoration. Slime Balls can be Right Clicked onto Thatch Blocks to Seal them preventing them from drying out further similarly to Honeycomb on Oxidizing Copper Blocks. Shears can be Right Clicked on Thatch Blocks to remove Seals and revert them to previous drying stages. Knifes have access to the Sharpness, Bane of Arthropods, Looting, Unbreaking, and Mending Enchantments.
6 New Enchantments

Axe: Execute = Critical Hits deal more damage. 3 Levels.

Knife/Bow: Sneak Attack = Sneaking while attacking deals Critical Hits. 1 Level.
Knife/Club: Agility = Reduce the Attack Cooldown. 3 Levels.

-Previous food related Crafting Table Recipes such as Bread, Pumpkin Pies, Cakes, Cookies, and Stews have been changed to Cooking Station Recipes.
-New Cooking Station Recipes have been added to create more advanced foods such as Milk from Cheese or Wheat into Flour.
Summary

The design philosophy behind Drop 1: Autumn Eats was to expand and update the food systems of Minecraft by connecting it to other aspects of Minecraft similar to sewing pieces to a quilt. Each player plays Minecraft in different ways. Therefore, new content having strong connections to many different existing features helps ground it and fill spaces different player types enjoy.

Magic and Morsels Drop 2: Winter
Hollow Towers
The second drop of the year focuses primarily on the magic side of Magic and Morsels. Its features include the new Corrupt Hollow Biome, Turkey Neutral Mob, Enchanter Hostile Mob, Cauldron Update, Enchanting Tower Structure, 3 New Enchantments, and various Changes/Accessibility Features.
Corrupt Hollow Biome

The Corrupt Hollow is home to the undead of Minecraft as it is the only biome where they spawn during the day and do not burn. The Hollow is a Foggy Grey Biome that is purplish during the day and teal at night with Thorns, Dead Bushes, Spiders, Allays, Willow Trees, Deadwood Trees, Hanging Moss, and above ground Tuff. Thorns are small spiky greyish brown bushes that damage anything that breaks or walks through them similar to Sweet Berry Bushes. Willow trees have leaves that droop to the ground and can be walked through. Willow wood is greenish and similar to that of Oak or Birch. Any wood type can be turned into Deadwood by having lightning strike logs. Deadwood is a Medium Desaturated Brown color between Spruce and Pale Oak and it can be dyed to the 16 Dye Colors. The water inside the Corrupt Hollow is murky and blackish making it hard to see while under water. The Corrupt Hollow can be found between hot and cold biomes and is commonly near the pale garden, forests, and plains.
Turkey

Turkeys are Neutral slow moving birds native to the Autumn Forest and Taiga that fight back and gets faster when attacked. They harvest crops/berry bushes they are near and scare away phantoms. Turkeys lay eggs less often that chickens and drop 1-4 Raw Turkey and 2-6 Feathers when killed. Raw Turkey restores 3 Hunger and 3 Saturation while Cooked Turkey restores 6 Hunger and 15 Saturation. Turkeys can be bred using Tart Berries.
Enchanter

Enchanters are Hostile Illagers who apply a buff to a chosen mobs near them, making even Passive Mobs fight for them. The buff Enchanters give is called "Enchanted" which applies an enchanted glint to the Mob. The buff reduces knockback, increases the damage, and health of the Mob. Killing an Enchanter ends their buff and they drop books, paper, and Lapis. Enchanters have a 25% chance to drop 1 random Enchanted Book. Enchanters Spawn during Raids, inside Woodland Mansions, inside Enchanting Towers, and rarely in Pillager Raiding Groups.
Cauldron Update

The Cauldron can now be Right Clicked to craft recipes using Water, items that have been dropped inside it, and sometimes a Heat Source beneath it.

Cauldron Uses:
-Craft up to 6 of the same Potion at a time based on its Water Level. (Requires a Heat Source under it)
-Combine 2 Potions of the same type such as Normal, Splash, or Lingering. (Requires a Heat Source under it)
-Dye or remove any Dyes from 6 Dyable items at a time based on its Water Level per Dye.
-Oxidize up to 8 Copper items at a time based on its Water Level.
-Wet up to 8 blocks like Concrete at a time based on its Water Level.
-Craft up to 6 Empowered Food and Empowered Potions at a time by dropping them in alongside 4 additional items based on its Water Level. (Requires a Heat Source under it)
Enchanting Tower

The Enchanting Tower is a Stone Brick Tower with 3 Floors and a cone roof that spawns Enchanters and Illagers in Trial Chamber like Spawners providing Mob Drops, Enchanted Books, Weapons, Armor, and Emeralds as loot. The top floor of the Enchanting Tower always spawns with an Enchanting Table. Enchanting Towers have roofs and interior wood blocks made from the wood type of the biome they are in. Enchanting Towers are early to mid game combat challenges that can become late game farms similar to the Trial Chambers.
Pedestals

Pedestals are Directional Blocks like Logs that hold and display 1 item or stack of items floating on top of them. Right Clicking a Pedestal with an empty hand takes the item and Right Clicking it with an item in your hand swaps the items. Items inside Pedestals can be rotated by Shift Right Clicking it. Pedestals are made with 1 Amethyst in the top center, 1 of any Stone Block or Stripped Wood Block in the Center, and 1 Redstone Dust in the Bottom Center.
Pedestals gives off a Redstone Signal Strength based on how many items are in it. While giving off full Redstone Strength, items on the ground that are the same item as what a Pedestal is holding are pulled toward it if they are within a 4 Block Radius Sphere of it. Mobs that are drawn to specific items such as Carrots, Wheat, Turtle Eggs, Gold, and Emeralds will also be attracted by Pedestals holding those items.
3 New Enchantments

Fishing Rod: Dredge = Chance to Spawn a Water Mob where you cast your line based on the Biome you are in. 1 Level.

-Redstone Dust can now be Dyed. Dyed Redstone Dust cannot interact with differently Dyed Redstone Dust.
-Shears are updated to Right Click to trim plants to a new texture and prevent crops from growing to other stages.
-Previous Golden Food related Crafting Table Recipes such as Enchanted Golden Apples, Golden Apples, Golden Carrots, and Glistering Melon have been changed to Cauldron Recipes.
Summary

The design philosophy behind Drop 2: Hollow Towers was to expand and update the magical aspects of Minecraft that were added in the 2011 Adventure Update. To do this I wanted to explore the lore behind magic and the Undead mobs of Minecraft. The Corrupt Hollow Biome was designed to be the origin biome of undead mobs and the newest Enchanting Tower Structure helps tie the Enchanting Mechanic naturally into the world of Minecraft using the Illagers who already practice Magic from Minecraft Dungeons. The update to the Cauldron was done to connect cooking and adventuring to magic in a fun and Minecrafty way while creating parity between Bedrock and Java Cauldrons.

Magic and Morsels Drop 3: Spring
Hunter's Gear
The third drop of the year focuses primarily on combat and crafting. Its features include the new Hunter Neutral Mob, Crafting Station Updates, Shack Structure, Crates, Roof Blocks, Club Weapon, 6 New Enchantments, and various Changes/Accessibility Features.
Hunter

The Hunter is the first Villager Type Neutral Mob that can attack. Hunters can Swap between a Bow at range and Knife up close and hunts Animal Mobs they come across. Hunters can spawn in any biome with a 30% chance to spawn with a Wolf tamed to them similar to a Wandering Trader around a player. Hunters can be Right Clicked to Sell and Buy Mob Drops and Food for Emeralds. When killed Hunters don't drop anything.

-The Fletching Table is updated to have 3 Input Slots and 1 Output Slot used to craft tiered arrows and arrows in general more efficiently out of more types of materials like bones, leaves, Amythist, Prismarine, Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond, and Netherite. The Fletching Table can also now apply potions to up to a full stack of arrows.
-The Blast Furnace is updated to now smelt 2 ingots at a time rather than 1 and has a chance to create nuggets of the ores you are melting and blocks of various stone types in a 2x2 secondary output.
-The Stone Cutter is renamed to the Saw Cutter and is updated to work with wood blocks. It can now more efficiently create crafted blocks such as Wood Planks from Logs, Stone Bricks, and be used to Strip Logs and De-Wax Copper Blocks.
Shack

The Shack is small 1 floor run down wooden Structure that rarely spawns in Forest and Plain type biomes and is made out of the wood type in the biome. Inside the Shack are shelves and barrels that can have various food items, wood, weapons, or tools. It has a bed and a secret cellar that is accessed from outside that can have barrels that contain hostile mob drops.
Crates

Crates are wooden boxes that have 54 Slots for 1 Item Type whether they are stackable or non-stackable items. By placing Crates next to each other in a 2X2 or 3X3, it connects its Inventory similar to a Double Chest. Crates can be crafted in a Crafting Table using 4 Stripped Logs in the center top, center bottom, and center sides. Crates broken with a Silk Touch Axe prevents them from dropping their items when broken.
Roof Blocks

Roof Blocks can be made from the same materials as Stairs and modify the Stairs Crafting Recipe. Stairs now can be made in a 2X2 Crafting Grid using 3 Blocks in an L shape to create 3 Stairs. Roof Blocks are made using the old Stair Crafting Recipe. Roof Blocks have 3 steps instead of 2 and they can be walked up like Stairs. Uniquely, Roof Blocks can be Right Clicked with any block that can be made into Roof Blocks to add the block's texture as Shingles on it.
Club

The Club is a slow high damage Melee Weapon similar to the Mace. A Club is made using 1 Stick and 4 Tiered Materials in a 2X2 on top of it. Clubs can hold down Right Click to wind up a swing which launches mobs further away. Clubs similarly to fishing rods can interact with fallen items and hit them around. Clubs have access to the Breach, Knockback, Looting, Unbreaking, and Mending Enchantments.

-Lava can now Lavalog Blocks similar to how Water can Waterlog Blocks.
-The Corrupt Hollow now spawns Suspicious Gravel in it.

Summary

The design philosophy behind Drop 3: Hunter's Gear was to update the crafting stations and combat to better intertwine the other mechanics of Minecraft. Filling in the gaps between features is important in a Drop cycle. Quality of life and building content helps to improve the old features which are used across all player types and sets up the final Drop.

Magic and Morsels Drop 4: Summer
Mystic Lands
The fourth and last drop of the year focuses primarily on wrapping up the magic and cooking mechanics. Its features include the new Raiser Hostile Mob, Runestone Blocks, Neutral Runestone Golem, 33 New Fish Types, Dungeon Update, Above Ground Ruins, Hide Blocks, 6 New Enchantments, and various Changes/Accessibility Features.
Raiser

The Raiser is an Undead Warlock-like Hostile Mob that summons Zombies, Skeletons, and Phantoms to fight for it while it moves quickly avoiding players. It has 27 Hearts and is similarly difficult to Evokers or the Creeking. The Raiser Spawns in the Corrupt Hollow Biome, Graveyards, and rarely in other biomes and in caves. When killed the Raiser drops 1-2 Bones, 1-2 Rotten Flesh, 1-4 Corrupted Souls, and has a 10% chance to drop a Soulbound Enchanted Book.
Corrupted Souls can be consumed by players to gain up to 4 Corrupted Hearts that regenerate like normal Hearts, but vanish on death. Having any number of Corrupted Hearts spawns a Zombie upon the player's death which holds their armor and items. Corrupted Souls can be Shift Right Clicked on Mob Spawners to upgrade them up to 3 times.
Upgrade 1: Increases the Mob Spawner's Range.
Upgrade 2: Increases the Amount of Mobs the Mob Spawner spawns.
Upgrade 3: Decreases the Mob Spawner's cooldown between spawning Mobs.
Players who enter a Stronghold with any number of Corrupted Hearts cause the Spawners in it to upgrade difficulty similarly to the Bad Omen effect in Trial Chambers.
Runestone Blocks

Runestone Blocks are crafted in a Cauldron using 1 Skulk Block, 1 Stone Block, 1 Flint, and 1 Amethyst to create 8 Runestone Blocks. Runestone Blocks can absorb Experience Orbs near them and can store up to 5 Experience Levels, having their Runes Glow brighter the more Experience they have. Right Clicking any type of Runestone Block stores 1 Experience Level in it and Shift Right Clicking any Runestone Block retrieves 1 Experience Level stored in it. Runestone Blocks can be made into Cobbled Runestone, Runestone Pebbles, Runestone Bricks, and Polished Runestone.
Runestone Golems are slightly bigger than an Iron Golem and are made out of the new Runestone Bricks and 1 Carved Pumpkin in the same formation to make an Iron Golem. Runestone Golems attack Hostile Mobs and have 80 Hearts. It, unlike an Iron Golem, requires Experience to be active and will become Idle and stop moving over time. The Runestone Golem can be Right Clicked to give it a player's Experience or it can collect Experience Orbs on the ground. The Runestone Golem can be Enchanted by Right Clicking it with certain Enchanted Books to give them its Enchantment. For example, Fire Aspect, Slow, Agility, Sweeping Edge, Looting, Mending, Protection, and so on work on Runestone Golems.
Updated Fishing

Each Climate will have their own pools of Fish that can be caught which can be used in various Cooking and Cauldron Recipes. Fishing Rods are updated to now be able to be used with Fishing Tackle similarly to Bows using Arrows. Fishing Tackle can now be crafted at Fletching Tables and is used to greatly reduce the time it takes between catching fish in particular climates and provide unique advantages. All Fish can now be shapelessly crafted into Scales which can be used to make Scale Arrows, Scale Blocks, Fertilizer, and Potions of Haste.

Temperate Tackle: Bait = Reduces the time it takes to Catch things in Temperate Biomes. Increases the Experience gained from fishing.
Cold Tackle: Frost Net = Reduces the time to Catch things in Cold Biomes. Catching fish puts them into a Water Bucket if one is in your inventory.
Hot Tackle: Lilly Fly = Reduces the time it takes to Catch things in Hot Biomes. Catching things automatically recasts the line.
Ocean Tackle: Diamond Line = Reduces the time it takes to Catch things in Ocean Biomes. Increases the time players have to reel in their Catch before it leaves.

Void Fish: Void Gill, Anglerfish, Astral Jelly, Dragonfish, Eldritch Squid
Dungeon Updates

Underground Dungeons are updated visually and can spawn in 3 different sizes such as Small, Medium, and Large. Depending on the biome, Dungeons can have Biome Specific Mob Spawners such as Husks, Strays, Bogged, and so on. These changes add more diversity to Mob Spawners and can drastically impact the caving experience.

Along with the Dungeons being updated, it only felt natural to update the most well known Dungeon, the Stronghold. The Stronghold is now visually updated and is larger to contain more dynamic rooms similar to the Trial Chambers and Deep Dark Cities. The lore I created to expand the Stronghold was that it was created by the ancient mobs of the Overworld to seal away what remained of the End Portal Frame after it was closed long ago. To capture this Trail Chamber style Spawners are now in the Stronghold and spawn various undead mobs that represent the Ancient mobs of the Overworld that will rise again to guard the Stronghold against the players who try to relight the End Portal.
Ruins

Different types of Ruined Structures now generate uncommonly in various biomes in the Overworld and across dimensions. Some specific Ruins have loot such as chests with items or even Mob Spawners, but its uncommon. All Ruins have Suspicious Dirt, Gravel, or Sand.
Alongside Ruins, the Graveyard Structure is a new flat half walled in area with headstones and mausoleums that spawn Zombies and Skeletons at night from Mob Spawners. Graveyards have Suspicious Blocks with Archeology loot such as a Trims, Treasure Maps, Gold, Iron, Copper, Bones, Rotten Flesh, Emeralds, Enchanted Weapons, Armors, and Tools. Graveyards commonly generate in the Corrupt Hollow Biome and rarely in other Biomes in the Overworld.
Hide Blocks

Hide Blocks can be Dyed any of the 16 Dye Colors and can be mined quickly like Scaffolding with any tool. Hide Blocks can be crafted in a Crafting Table using 1 Thatch Block in the center, 4 Leather in the outer center slots, and 4 sticks in the corners to get 8 Hide Blocks. Stripping a Hide Block with an Axe turns them into Rawhide Blocks similar to Stripped Logs maintaining any Dye Colors they had. Shift Right Clicking String on any type of Hide Block Stitches them. 1 Piston can move up to 9 Stitched Hide Blocks that are next to or diagonal from other Stitched Hide Blocks. Shears can be used to Unstitch Hide Blocks.
Mysthide Blocks can be Right Clicked with a Block to copy its appearance. When given a Redstone Signal they fade becoming see-through and lose their Collision Box until the Redstone signal goes away. Mysthide Blocks are crafted in a Cauldron using 1 Resin, 1 Hide Block, 1 Redstone Dust, and 1 Phantom Membrane to create 4 Mysthide Blocks.
6 New Enchantments

All Items: Soulbound = If you die with it in your inventory you spawn with it instead of dropping it.
All Tools: Autosmelt = Automatically Smelts Blocks you mine. 1 Level.
All Armor: Glow = Radiates a Small Light Level around you. 3 Levels.
All Weapons: Lifesteal = Chance to Restore Half a Heart to you. 3 Levels.
Fishing Rod: Hook = Catches 1 More thing. 3 Levels.
Fishing Rod: Bait Saver = Chance to not consume Fishing Tackle when Fishing. 3 Levels.
Changes/Accessibility Features

-Soul Candles are added alongside Soul Torches and Soul Lanterns. Soul Torches now increase the spawn rate of Hostile Mobs around them. Up to 8 Soul Candles, Soul Torches, or Soul Lanterns can be converted into Purified Candles, Purified Torches, or Purified Lanterns in a Cauldron at a time using 1 Fermented Spider Eye, 1 Golden Apple, 1 Glow Berry, and 1 of any Flower. Purified Candles, Purified Torches, and Purified Lanterns prevent Hostile Mob spawning and increase the spawn rate of Passive Mobs around them.
-The Skeleton Wolf Variant now Spawns in the Corrupt Hollow and can be tamed with Antlers.
-The Grizzly Bear Variant now spawns in Forest Biomes.
-Resin can now be Shift Right Clicked on Redstone Components to Coat them, preventing them from being washed away in liquids.
Summary

The design philosophy behind Drop 4: Mystic Lands wraps up the Magic and Morsels Update with the last set of new additions to cooking and magic. Expanding on fishing and dungeons felt like a natural end to the year as both features take the concepts of cooking and magic in fun new directions. The last Drop of the Update is perfect for polishing and rounding off features that were released in Drops throughout the year. The Magic and Morsels Custom Update has been a blast to work on and I can see features like the ones I designed eventually being added to Minecraft.
